Challenges Soleno Therapeutics, a rare-disease biotechnology company, was scaling its operations while managing highly sensitive clinical, regulatory, legal, financial, and commercial information. Its decentralized security environment relied on disconnected tools and lacked a unified view of data access and permissions. This made it difficult for the IT team to consistently identify, prevent, and respond to evolving security risks. Soleno also needed stronger information governance to protect irreplaceable clinical trial data, regulatory submissions, intellectual property, and patient-related information while supporting its continued growth. The challenge became more complex as the company expanded internationally. When Soleno established an office in Dublin, European employee data remained within a U.S.-rooted SharePoint environment without appropriate EU data residency. Its small internal IT team was also spending significant time handling access requests, resolving permission issues, and assembling security information from separate systems. Soleno needed a scalable Microsoft 365 security and governance foundation that could reduce operational complexity, improve data protection, support regional compliance requirements, and prepare the organization for the secure use of Microsoft 365 Copilot. Solution Soleno selected Netwoven as its Microsoft partner to deploy Microsoft Defender and Microsoft Purview Suite for Business Premium across its Microsoft 365 environment. Microsoft Defender was implemented as an integrated protection layer covering users, endpoints, email, collaboration data, and Microsoft 365 Copilot usage. Microsoft Purview complemented this protection by providing information classification, governance, and data control capabilities suitable for a regulated biotechnology organization. Netwoven helped Soleno establish sustainable security guardrails and a tiered sensitivity-labeling system ranging from “Public” to “High Risk,” ensuring that documents received appropriate protection wherever they were stored or shared. The labeling framework also provided the flexibility required for specialized regulatory scenarios. For example, because European Medicines Agency submissions cannot include watermarks, Soleno created a dedicated regulatory-submission label without watermarking rather than manually modifying individual documents. To address international data residency requirements, Microsoft Multi-Geo capabilities were used to create a properly separated environment for the Dublin team with EU data residency. This enabled Soleno to strengthen regional compliance without introducing additional vendors, infrastructure, or separate security platforms. Business Impact The deployment gave Soleno a more organized, unified, and consistently governed Microsoft 365 environment. By consolidating security, identity, endpoint, data, and collaboration risk visibility within a connected Microsoft platform, Soleno’s IT team gained greater control over its digital ecosystem and reduced its dependence on reactive troubleshooting. Security and governance policies could be implemented more consistently, while sensitive information was properly classified, controlled, and protected. According to Soleno’s Vice President and Head of IT, the team moved from being overwhelmed by SharePoint support tickets to no longer receiving those routine requests, allowing IT resources to focus on more strategic initiatives. Microsoft Multi-Geo also provided the foundation for secure international expansion by establishing EU data residency for the Dublin operation without disrupting employees or increasing operational complexity. With Microsoft Defender and Purview Suite for Business Premium in place, Soleno created a stronger foundation for compliance, responsible AI adoption, and long-term growth. The company is now expanding its use of Microsoft Viva and evaluating Microsoft Sentinel to extend centralized threat visibility across its broader technology environment. Overall, the engagement transformed security and information governance from an operational challenge into a scalable business enabler that helps Soleno protect sensitive data, support global operations, and remain focused on its mission of serving patients affected by rare diseases.
